U.S. Rep. Angie Craig Pushing for Funds to Install Fentanyl Scanners at the Southern Border

March 13, 2024

NBC News: “Scanners that spot smuggled fentanyl at the border sit unused because Congress hasn’t provided the cash to install them.”

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representative Angie Craig is leading the charge in the U.S. House of Representatives to secure the federal funding needed to install fentanyl scanners at the southern border.

Rep. Craig wrote to top congressional appropriators following news reports that high-tech fentanyl scanners are sitting unused in warehouses because Congress has not passed the funding needed to install them.

“I have repeatedly called for additional funding to restore order at the border and this technology is an important facet of that. If my Republican colleagues are serious about this issue, they’ll support this critical funding – because keeping our constituents safe must come first,” wrote Rep. Craig. “I have heard from too many families who have lost loved ones to the fentanyl crisis to stand by. I urge you to include funding for this fentanyl scanning technology in the final FY24 funding legislation. We must act.”

U.S. Senator Jon Tester sent a similar letter in the Senate last week. Rep. Craig’s letter makes this a bicameral effort.

Rep. Craig has been a leader in the House on this issue, successfully passing two bipartisan bills to address the fentanyl crisis – theEND FENTANYL Act and the RECONNECTIONS Act.

Last February, Rep. Craig traveled with 17 House Republicans to the southern border where she urged bipartisan action to prevent overdose deaths and keep communities safe.
