BREAKING: U.S. House Passes Rep. Craig’s Bipartisan Bill to Help Stop Fentanyl at the Southern Border

The END FENTANYL Act passed unanimously

This is Rep. Craig’s second bipartisan bill to pass the House this Congress – both aimed at fighting the fentanyl crisis

WASHINGTON, DC – In a unanimous vote, the U.S. House of Representatives passed Rep. Angie Craig’s bipartisan legislation to help stop the smuggling of illicit fentanyl through U.S. ports of entry.

The bipartisan, bicameral Eradicating Narcotic Drugs and Formulating Effective New Tools to Address National Yearly Losses of Life (END FENTANYL) Act would require Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to update its manuals at least every three years in order to identify new ways to prevent drug and human smuggling through ports of entry.

The END FENTANYL Act would also increase oversight of CBP by requiring the agency to notify Congress of any changes in protocol, including at the southern border.

“We must do everything we can to help address the fentanyl crisis – and starts with the drug coming across our border in the first place. I’m proud that Republicans and Democrats came together to pass my legislation that helps accomplish that goal.  said Rep. Craig. “In addition to my bill, I continue to urge Speaker Johnson to bring the Senate’s bipartisan border security deal to a vote in the House – both parties must act now to restore order and help address the fentanyl crisis at the border.”

According to the Minnesota Department of Health, opioid-involved overdose deaths increased by 44% between 2020 and 2021, with fentanyl involved in the majority of cases.

This is Rep. Craig’s second bill to pass the House this Congress. Her bipartisan RECONNECTIONS Act passed the House in December to help address the fentanyl crisis.

Last year, Rep. Craig successfully urged the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to fully approve over-the-counter distribution of Narcan, a medicine used to reverse overdoses. Rep. Craig was trained to administer Narcan in August of last year.

Last February, Rep. Craig traveled with 17 Republicans to the southern border where she urged bipartisan action to prevent more overdose deaths and keep communities safe.
