U.S. Rep. Angie Craig Leads Call to Expand Domestic Renewable Fuels Production

July 10, 2024

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Representative Angie Craig led a group of 37 House Republicans and Democrats in calling on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to expand annual Renewable Volumes Obligations for biomass-based diesel in their upcoming rulemaking for 2026.

The EPA’s Renewable Volumes Obligations for 2023-25, though set at a historic high, were significantly below production trends and caused a collapse in the value of Renewable Fuel Standard credits that continues to stifle the growth of critical renewable fuels markets today.

“Increased production and availability of renewable fuel will provide a direct benefit to consumers both at the pump and at the grocery checkout,” wrote the lawmakers. “It is important now more than ever that we identify and promote opportunities that lower costs for consumers and support economic growth in rural communities.”

Rep. Craig has long advocated for the expansion of biofuel production in Minnesota and across the country. Last year, Rep. Craig introduced bipartisan, bicameral legislation to ensure that the EPA’s greenhouse gas modeling would accurately reflect the environmental benefits of homegrown biofuel production.
