Representative Angie Craig Highlights Efforts to Protect Women’s Access to Reproductive Care Amid Ongoing Republican Attacks on Choice
She highlights the ironic nature of celebrating Women’s Equality Day while millions of women across the country watch their ability to make their own health care decisions disappear
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, on Women's Equality Day, U.S. Representative Angie Craig highlighted her efforts to shore up women's access to reproductive care in the wake of the Supreme Court's calamitous decision to reverse Roe v. Wade.
"Fighting to support the basic notion that women should be in control of their own health care is not exactly the way I want to be celebrating Women's Equality Day. But in the year 2022, the actions of our activist, extremist Supreme Court have left me no choice," said Representative Craig. "There is no better way to give women an equal place at the table than by ensuring they have the right to make their own health care decisions – free from the influence of any government or politician. And today serves as an important reminder that we must do everything in our power to protect their ability to do so."
In the weeks following the reversal of Roe v. Wade, Representative Craig has led continuous efforts to protect women's access to reproductive care. Just a few weeks ago, the House passed Representative Craig's Right to Contraception Act, legislation that would codify the legal right for women to access devices and medication designed to prevent pregnancy – such as birth control pills, IUDs and condoms. Earlier in July, Representative Craig helped pass two critical pieces of reproductive rights legislation, the Women's Health Protection Act, which would restore 50 years of Roe precedent and the Ensuring Access to Abortion Act, whichwould ensure that a woman can cross state lines without being criminalized for accessing abortion.
