Ahead of Senate Markup, U.S. Rep. Angie Craig Leads Call to House and Senate Leadership for Congressional Stock Trading Ban

July 23, 2024

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, ahead of the historic markup in the U.S. Senate for legislation that would ban Members of Congress from trading stocks, U.S. Representative Angie Craig led a coalition of House Members pushing Speaker Johnson, Majority Leader Schumer and congressional leaders to bring a congressional stock trading ban to a vote on the House Floor.

Rep. Craig has been a leader on this issue since she was first elected to Congress. Her HUMBLE Act is one of the most expansive stock trading ban proposals in Congress.

In their letter to House Leadership, the Members outline a bipartisan deal that the leaders on this issue have proposed in the past – including principles from specific prohibitions to enforcement mechanisms.

“In this time of polarization, it is crucial that we are advancing legislation that has support from across the political spectrum,” the Members wrote. “There is no shortage of bipartisan legislation ready to be voted on that model this established set of shared principles. We respectfully urge you to ensure elected officials are held to the highest standard.”

This letter follows the Senate's announcement on reaching a bipartisan deal on their Ending Trading and Holdings in Congressional Stocks (ETHICS) Act and its anticipated markup in the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.
