U.S. Representative Angie Craig Secures $4.9 Million for Dakota County for Veterans Memorial Greenway Project

January 5, 2023

The federal funding will be used to create a space commemorating the service of veterans from across Dakota County and Minnesota

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representative Angie Craig secured $4,995,000 to construct a Veterans Memorial Greenway in Dakota County. The greenway will commemorate the service of all Minnesota veterans. The greenway will also serve as a public space for community events in Dakota County.

“The veteran community here in Dakota County has a long and storied history, and I pushed to bring these federal dollars back home to help honor their service in a new way. The Veterans Memorial Greenway will provide our community with a new outdoor space and our veterans with a recognition for their service. I look forward to seeing this project come to life,” said Representative Craig.

“Dakota County appreciates the leadership of U.S. Rep. Angie Craig in helping secure federal funding for projects in Dakota County like the proposed Interstate 35 interchange and the Veterans Memorial Greenway,” said Dakota County Board Chair Liz Workman. “Securing these federal funds is important in ensuring a safe, efficient transportation corridor and a one-of-a-kind destination where our veterans’ sacrifices and contributions will be honored on the state’s longest memorial greenway.”

The Dakota County Veterans Memorial Greenway will be Minnesota’s longest greenway dedicated to veterans, offering a year-round, safe and universally accessible outdoor space for diverse visitors to enjoy nature, celebrate the state’s strong tradition of military service and honor all veterans. In addition, the development of the Veterans Memorial Greenway is critical to enhancing pedestrian safety. The current route will increase safety by eliminating crossing conflicts with 54,000 trucks and other vehicles daily on County Roads 71 and 73, and State Highways 3 and 52, will enhance pedestrian safety to trains traveling on two active rail lines and the space will be a welcoming and accommodating space for the county’s more than 6,600 veterans with disabilities.
