U.S. Representative Angie Craig Secures $3 Million to Provide Critical Safety Improvements to Burnsville’s Highway 13 and Nicollet Avenue Intersection

WASHINGTON, DC – As part of her efforts to improve public safety in the Second District, U.S. Representative Angie Craig secured $3 million for the city of Burnsville to redesign the Highway 13 and Nicollet Avenue intersection.

In recent years, this intersection has become increasingly dangerous for the thousands of drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists that use it daily. Over the last six years, there have been over 100 crashes – and most recently, two deadly pedestrian crashes – at the intersection.

Rep. Craig launched her push to secure the funding last year, and the redesign of this intersection will help prevent future accidents and reduce traffic delays.

“The high number of crashes at the intersection of Highway 13 and Nicollet Ave is deeply alarming and calls for urgent action from public safety and government officials. I worked to secure this funding to make the intersection safer for the thousands of drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists who cross through it every day,” said Rep. Craig.

“As Mayor, ensuring the safety of Burnsville residents is always one of my top priorities. Over the past few years, we have seen the number of crashes at the Highway 13 and Nicollet Avenue intersection climb to a concerning level – but receiving this $3 million in federal funding will help us redesign this intersection to make it safer for the thousands of people who cross through it daily. It was great working with Rep. Craig to secure these critical funds for our city,” said Burnsville Mayor Elizabeth Kautz.

The intersection of Highway 13 and Nicollet Avenue is considered one of the most important transit access points in the Southern Metro area. However, the intersection is plagued with high-speed crashes, traffic congestion and dangerous crossings for both pedestrians and bicyclists. This federal funding will allow the city to redesign the intersection in a way that will reduce delays by over 500 percent and make critical safety improvements for pedestrians and bicyclists.
