U.S. Rep. Angie Craig Secures $750,000 to Repair Shakopee Trails, Honor Dakota History
SHAKOPEE, MN – U.S. Representative Angie Craig secured $750,000 to help repair trails in the City of Shakopee and install new historical exhibits honoring the ancestors of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community.
Once repaired, the trails in the Shakopee Riverfront Cultural Corridor will be accessible for more Minnesotans, making a positive impact on economic development in Shakopee.
The riverbank area also contains burial mounds of the ancestors of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community, and this federal funding will help build installations along the trail honoring their history and culture.
“Today’s funding will help upgrade Shakopee’s infrastructure and ensure we respect the history and culture of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community,” said Rep. Craig. “I will keep working with local and federal partners to ensure this project is completed in a timely and efficient manner so more Minnesotans can enjoy the Shakopee area.”
“The priority along the cultural corridor is protecting the existing main sewer line infrastructure from riverbank erosion. Repairing and updating the city-owned trails in the same area and at the same time is cost efficient. Improving Shakopee’s Cultural Corridor will ensure that everyone is able to access and enjoy Shakopee's impressive beauty, history and ecology along its river front. We’ve had many infrastructure successes over the past years working with Rep. Craig – and we appreciate her efforts to secure funding on this project, and look forward to working together in the future,” said Shakopee Mayor Matt Lehman.
This is the second round of direct federal funding secured by Rep. Craig to support the Shakopee Riverfront Cultural Corridor. In March of 2022, Rep. Craig secured $3.5 million for stabilization efforts through the FY22 omnibus appropriations bill.
