U.S. Rep. Angie Craig Pushing to Strengthen Community Policing

March 22, 2023

Bipartisan EAGLE Act would establish new grant programs for small and mid-sized police departments

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representative Angie Craig introduced bipartisan legislation to support small police departments and invest in community-oriented policing.

The bipartisan Establishing Accreditation Grants for Law Enforcement (EAGLE) Act will authorize $10 million in federal funding to help small and mid-sized police departments obtain new accreditations that will strengthen community policing efforts.

“It’s critical that we do everything we can to ensure our officers can easily access the support and resources they need. This bill will ensure that the small and mid-sized police departments that cover the Second District have streamlined access to the accreditation, training and community policing resources they need,” said Rep. Craig. “I’ll keep working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to get this legislation over the finish line.”

The bill is supported by both the Fraternal Order of Police and the Small and Rural Law Enforcement Executive Association.

Rep. Craig joined Reps. Chris Pappas (NH-01) and Brian Fitzpatrick (PA-01) to introduce this bipartisan bill as part of her continued efforts to ensure local law enforcement has access to the support and resources needed to do their jobs safely and effectively.

Last Congress, Rep. Craig’s Public Safety Officer Support Act was signed into law – providing law enforcement officers and their families with increased access to disability benefits for post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental health challenges that arise as a result of their service in the line of duty.
