U.S. Rep. Angie Craig Passes Bipartisan Bill to Protect American Farmland from Foreign Adversaries

September 12, 2024

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Representative Angie Craig helped pass the bipartisan Protecting American Agriculture from Foreign Adversaries Act, continuing her work to strengthen domestic agricultural markets for American farmers.

The bipartisan bill will crack down on foreign adversaries buying up American farmland by requiring the Secretary of Agriculture to report any farmland acquisition made by foreign nationals from China, North Korea, Iran and Russia.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, as of 2022, over 582,000 acres of farmland in Minnesota are owned by foreign entities. Nationwide, over 43.4 million acres of farmland are held in interest by foreign persons.

“Ensuring agricultural land ownership stays in the hands of family farmers here at home instead of adversaries like China is not just critical for our economy, it’s critical for our national security,” said Rep. Craig. “That’s why I was proud to join Republicans and Democrats to pass this bill through the House. I’ll keep working to ensure our family farmers have the tools and resources they need as they work to feed and fuel our nation.”
