U.S. Rep. Angie Craig Introduces Legislation to Strengthen Labor Protections for Delivery Workers
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Representative Angie Craig introduced legislation to require SNAP-authorized retailers to pay good wages to delivery workers and make it easier for SNAP enrollees to utilize online grocery delivery.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a federal program that helps low-income families purchase groceries.
Rep. Craig’s Food and Nutrition Delivery Safety Act would require all SNAP-authorized retailers to provide delivery workers with fair wages and safe working conditions and would help ensure safe and reliable SNAP delivery to American families.
“This is a common sense bill to ensure food retailers who receive SNAP funding pay their delivery workers a fair wage and provide safe, reliable online delivery service to families across my district who rely on SNAP. I’ll keep working to strengthen protections for workers and help families put food on the table,” said Rep. Craig.
“With the rise of the gig economy, countless delivery workers are underpaid and lack important resources for the hard work they do delivering essential goods to households across the nation. This is even true for SNAP delivery workers who are the ones that ensure that SNAP recipients and their families have food on their tables. This landmark piece of legislation would establish long-needed guardrails for all delivery workers within the SNAP delivery program,” said Marc Perrone, President of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) International Union. “Delivery workers’ pay should reflect the significant value their essential work provides in communities nationwide. The UFCW urges Congress to pass this bill in order to give SNAP delivery workers the basic labor protections, pay, equipment, and resources they deserve.”
U.S. Senators John Fetterman (D-PA) and Sherrod Brown (D-OH) introduced the Senate companion of the Food and Nutrition Delivery Safety Act earlier this year.
