March 9, 2022

Appropriations package includes security and humanitarian aid for Ukraine – and more than $16 million in federal funding for local projects championed by Craig

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Representative Angie Craig helped pass annual funding legislation that includes several key priorities designed to support working families and local communities in Minnesota's Second Congressional District. The package, which includes 12 appropriations bills, includes $782 billion in defense spending and $730 billion in non-defense funding.

The appropriations package, which is set to pass the Senate later this week before heading to the President's desk for final approval, contained several of Craig's priorities, including humanitarian and security assistance for Ukraine, funding for local law enforcement agencies to hire additional officers, resources to support small businesses and investments to shore up American supply chains and lower costs for working families.

"Today, I was proud to support a critical funding package which will help lower the cost of living for working families, make historic investments in economic development, protect our national security and support local communities in Minnesota's Second Congressional District," said Representative Craig. "I'm especially pleased that this bipartisan agreement will direct critical humanitarian and security assistance to the people of Ukraine – and invest more than $16 million in projects across southeastern Minnesota that will help to create jobs and hasten our economic recovery."

The package includes funding for federal defense and non-defense spending, and also includes key priorities of Craig's, including:

  • $13.6 billion in emergency funding to defend the Ukrainian people and global democracy against Russia's unprovoked attack
  • $13.2 billion for VA mental health services, including $598 million to fund suicide prevention outreach
  • A 2.7 percent pay raise for all 2.1 million uniformed U.S. service members
  • $3.9 billion in grants to state and local law enforcement including:
    • $512 million for Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS) programs, an increase of more than $125 million over the FY21 enacted level.
    • $674.5 million for Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grants, an increase of more than $190 million over the FY21 enacted level.
  • $13.3 billion in funding for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
  • $1.38 billion for Career & Technical Education programs and $235 million for Registered Apprenticeships
  • $1 billion for the Small Business Administration to invest in programs to help small businesses and entrepreneurs access capital and contracting opportunities

Today's appropriations package includes funding for nine of Representative Craig's Community Project Funding submissions for Minnesota's Second Congressional District – totaling more than $16 million for projects in communities across Southeastern Minnesota, including:
