Representative Angie Craig Statement on House Passage of H.R. 1, the For the People Act

March 4, 2021

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Representative Angie Craig released the following statement on the House passage of H.R. 1, the For the People Act, a comprehensive ethics and electoral reform bill that would protect voting rights, rein in the influence of big money in politics and restore ethics and accountability in Washington. Earlier this week, she delivered a speech on the House floor in support of H.R. 1.

"For far too long, ordinary Minnesotans have struggled to make their voices heard in Washington – fighting to overcome the undemocratic impact of voter suppression, gerrymandering and a flood of special interest dark money," said Representative Craig. "Today, I was proud to vote to reverse that trend by passing the most comprehensive democratic reform bill in a generation, which would protect American voting rights, ensure the integrity of our elections, hold elected officials accountable and end the era of dark money in our politics."

Key provisions of the For the People Act are listed below. For more information on the groundbreaking reform legislation, see here.

  • Forced disclosure of Super PAC money in politics
  • Strict enforcement of ethics and conflicts of interest rules for all government officials, including Rep. Craig's resolution to ban Members of Congress from serving on corporate boards while in office
  • The expansion of automatic, same day voter registration, vote by mail and early voting to ensure easy access to the ballot for all Americans
  • Efforts to address partisan gerrymandering

The legislation is supported by a wide array of leading grassroots advocacy organizations across the country, including Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, End Citizens United, League of Women Voters, Democracy Matters and more.

"Throughout her time in Congress, Angie Craig has been a fierce advocate of holding self-serving politicians accountable and protecting the right to vote," said End Citizens United / Let America Vote Action Fund President Tiffany Muller. "Craig ran on a platform of cleaning up corruption in Washington and has made good on that promise by passing the For the People Act. We're grateful for her leadership to make government more transparent and restore faith in our elections."
