Representative Angie Craig Statement on Appointment to Select Committee on Economic Disparity & Fairness in Growth
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Representative Angie Craig released the following statement after being named as one of the eight Members appointed to the Select Committee on Economic Disparity & Fairness in Growth:
"Addressing the need for economic opportunities and growth in rural and underserved communities – is a deeply personal issue for me. Growing up in a mobile home park in rural America, my mother worked multiple jobs while going to school to pay the bills. It has become increasingly difficult for many families to realize and take part in the American Dream, especially in rural communities as populations decline. Nowhere has that been clearer than on family farms and in small town across America.
Over the past year and a half, our nation has overcome some truly daunting challenges – but perhaps the biggest remaining obstacle that we face as elected representatives is ensuring that the economic growth we are now experiencing is realized and enjoyed by all Americans – not by just the most fortunate among us. Ensuring a robust and equitable economic recovery, especially in farm country, is absolutely critical to our nation's success – and I am incredibly honored to be selected as a member of the Select Committee charged with that momentous task."
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi established the Committee to combat the crisis of income and wealth disparity in America – modeled after President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Temporary National Economic Committee, which was founded after the Great Depression to study and combat the concentration of wealth in America and its role in triggering economic collapse. Earlier this week, Speaker Pelosi announced Representative Craig's inclusion in the committee, assigning her the responsibility of "representing the concerns of family farmers and rural communities." House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy intends to announce members to serve on the select committee "in the near future."
