Representative Angie Craig Announces Public Safety Funding for the City of Burnsville

October 5, 2022

The City of Burnsville will receive $36,113 to prevent and control crime

BURNSVILLE, MN – This week, U.S. Representative Angie Craig announced that the City of Burnsville will receive $36,113 from the Department of Justice to support the city’s efforts to prevent and control crime. This grant funding is made possible through the U.S. Department of Justice’s Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program, which helps local governments support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own local needs and conditions.

“No one knows the day-to-day challenges facing our law enforcement officers better than our officers and local leaders. This grant will help ensure the City of Burnsville is able to access the resources and support it needs to address the unique challenges and obstacles facing its own forces,” said Representative Craig. “Supporting our local law enforcement is key to keeping our communities safe – and I’m proud to be able to announce this critical funding today.”

“Every city faces unique public safety challenges – and I’m thrilled that Burnsville will be receiving this funding to ensure that we are able to take on these challenges in a safe and effective manner,” said Burnsville Mayor Elizabeth Kautz. “This grant will increase our law enforcement’s capacity to prevent and combat crime. I’m grateful for Representative Craig’s efforts to ensure Burnsville was able to secure this critical funding.”

Last year, Representative Craig voted to increase funding to the Edward Byrne Memorial JAG Grant Program by $190.5 million – a nearly 40% increase for this law enforcement-focused program from the previous fiscal year’s enacted funding level. This increased investment was signed into law shortly thereafter.

The Edward Byrne Memorial JAG Program allows states and units of local government, including tribes, to support a broad range of activities to prevent and control crime based on their own state and local needs and conditions. Last year, Representative Craig helped the cities of Burnsville, Inver Grove Heights, and West St. Paul receive more than $34,000 in public safety funding through the program. Police departments in the Second District are able to use the grant funds to purchase equipment vital to keeping local communities safe.
