Rep. Craig Cosponsors Bipartisan Legislation to Reform America’s Immigration System, Hold ICE Accountable

EAGAN, MN – Today, U.S. Representative Angie Craig officially cosponsored bipartisan legislation that would make meaningful reforms to our country’s broken immigration system.

The DIGNITY Act would grant legal status and protections to certain undocumented immigrants, reform the asylum screening process to provide legal options for asylum seekers, invest in border security and modernize ports of entry, create new regional processing centers for asylum seekers, mandate accountability for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and provide a pathway to citizenship for our country’s Dreamers.

The DIGNITY Act was originally introduced by Reps. Veronica Escobar (D-TX) and Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL).

“America is a country of immigrants, yet for too long, our broken immigration system has made it too hard for folks who come to this country looking for a better life to stay here,” said Rep. Craig. “It’s time to create a humane immigration system that actually works and provide a pathway to legal status for those who work, pay taxes and contribute to our economy. I’m proud to support this critical bill, which makes meaningful reforms to our immigration system without compromising our communities’ safety and security. It’s a win-win”

Rep. Craig has always advocated for a legal pathway to citizenship for our nation’s Dreamers and Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients. She has repeatedly cosponsored the bipartisan American Dream and Promise Act, which would provide a pathway to citizenship to Dreamers, recipients of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) and Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) beneficiaries. She is also a cosponsor of the America’s Children Act, which would provide a pathway to legal permanent residency for individuals who were brought to the U.S.as children and have since graduated from an institution of higher education.

Rep. Craig has also been a fervent defender of the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) program in the face of President Trump’s repeated attacks on TPS holders.

In July, she introduced the Temporary Protected Status Review Act, which would require the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to follow a clear, evidence-based process before terminating TPS and allow Congress to reverse TPS terminations under the Congressional Review Act.
