Rep. Angie Craig Joins Amicus Brief to Protect Medication Abortion Access

April 11, 2023

Texas court decision could eliminate access to mifepristone in every state in the nation, including Minnesota

Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade last June, 17 states have banned or restricted abortion access

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Representative Angie Craig joined more than 100 House Democrats on an amicus brief aimed at protecting access to medication abortion following a Texas federal judge’s decision to suspend the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) approval of mifepristone.

“The GOP’s brazen attacks on women’s rights will cost lives, and I am deeply concerned about the future of our country if they continue,” said Rep. Craig. “I will do everything in my power as a Member of Congress to fight this decision and protect the fundamental rights of Minnesota women.”

If upheld, the ruling would supersede existing state laws and make mifepristone, the most commonly used abortion pill, unavailable in every state in the nation, including Minnesota. It  would also recklessly undermine the FDA’s well-established drug approval and scientific review process, with grave repercussions for patients and providers across the country.

Mifepristone is used in more than 50% of all abortions in the United States and, since its initial approval in 2000 by the FDA, has been repeatedly proven to be safe and effective.

If allowed to stand, this decision will be the biggest blow to abortion access since the fall of Roe v. Wade.
