Congresswoman Angie Craig Submits Request for Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community to Receive $750,000 for Stormwater Reclamation PFAs Reduction Project
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Representative Angie Craig announced her submission for the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community to receive $750,000 for the community's Stormwater Reclamation PFAS Reduction Project. Craig submitted her request for Community Project Funding (CPF) for the Fiscal Year 2023 Appropriations process, through which Members of Congress are able to request funding for up to 15 specific projects in their districts which would serve the public good.
"I'm proud to announce my submission for the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community to receive federal support for this important project," said Representative Craig. "Water is one of our most critical resources, and we should be doing everything we can to protect it. Completing this water reclamation system would allow us to take a critical step to ensuring our communities' water is clear of all environmental concerns and contaminants.
"Following our Dakota tradition of planning seven generations ahead, our Tribe works to protect and enhance our earth's natural resources. Fortunately, most of what is thrown into landfills in Minnesota could instead be reduced, reused, recycled or composted," said Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community Chairman Keith Anderson. "Our project would help the greater Twin Cities metro area reach its waste diversion goals while protecting and enhancing the environment for ourselves and future generations."
This project funding would be used to complete a water reclamation system at the new Organics Recycling Facility, setting a precedent for other Minnesota facilities by protecting surface and groundwater. The proposed project may receive materials that contain PFAS and other contaminants that are of environmental concern. The stormwater reclamation system would reuse all water runoff to allow the site to operate without being discharged off-site. This stormwater reclamation project is vital to the construction of the new Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community Organics Recycling Facility.
The House Appropriations Committee intends to fund community projects on a limited basis in the FY23 Appropriations bills. Therefore, CPF requests that address the most significant needs of local communities or provide a significant public good are more likely to be included. The CPF program is being implemented with accountability measures to ensure a responsible and transparent process.
