Congresswoman Angie Craig Submits Request for the City of Shakopee to Receive $750,000 for Riverfront Cultural Corridor Project

June 10, 2022

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Representative Angie Craig announced her submission for the City of Shakopee to receive $750,000 to repair and update trails and install interpretive exhibits in the city's Cultural Corridor. Craig submitted her request for Community Project Funding (CPF) for the Fiscal Year 2023 Appropriations process, through which Members of Congress are able to request funding for up to 15 specific projects in their districts which would serve the public good.

"I'm proud to announce my submission for the City of Shakopee to receive federal support for this important project," said Representative Craig. "Repairing the city-owned trails in the Cultural Corridor will ensure that everyone is able to access and enjoy all the beauty, history and ecology that Shakopee has to offer."

"Our Riverbank Stabilization and Culture Corridor will provide vital protection of our important infrastructure for our community and the Culture Corridor will unlock our long rich history with the Dakota people and our early English settlers," said Shakopee Mayor Bill Mars. "We will return to the river with honor and respect."

This funding for the Shakopee Riverfront Cultural Corridor Project will repair the trails in the Cultural Corridor and install fixtures that will make the trail accessible for everyone. Of additional significance, this riverbank contains burial mounds of the ancestors of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community. Completing Phase II of this project will bring people together to witness all of Shakopee and the Minnesota River's historical, cultural and ecological significance and build a cross-cultural understanding among those who live in and visit the Shakopee area.

The House Appropriations Committee intends to fund community projects on a limited basis in the FY23 Appropriations bills. Therefore, CPF requests that address the most significant needs of local communities or provide a significant public good are more likely to be included. The CPF program is being implemented with accountability measures to ensure a responsible and transparent process.
