BREAKING: President Biden Signs Rep. Craig’s Bipartisan Bill to Help Stop Fentanyl at the Southern Border
The END FENTANYL Act passed the House and Senate with bipartisan support
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, President Biden signed Rep. Angie Craig’s bipartisan legislation into law to help stop the smuggling of illicit fentanyl through U.S. ports of entry.
The bipartisan, bicameral Eradicating Narcotic Drugs and Formulating Effective New Tools to Address National Yearly Losses of Life (END FENTANYL) Act would require Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to update its manuals at least every three years in order to identify new ways to prevent drug and human smuggling through ports of entry.
The END FENTANYL Act would also increase oversight of CBP by requiring the agency to notify Congress of any changes in protocol, including at the southern border.
“Addressing the fentanyl crisis requires cooperation from every part of government – and that starts with effective and up-to-date CBP protocols at the border. I’m grateful to every Member of Congress who voted to pass my common sense bill, and to the President for quickly signing it into law,” said Rep. Craig. “I’ll keep working with both parties to restore order at the border.”
According to the Minnesota Department of Health, opioid-involved overdose deaths increased by 44% between 2020 and 2021, with fentanyl involved in the majority of cases.
This is Rep. Craig’s second bill to pass the House this Congress. Her bipartisan RECONNECTIONS Act passed the House in December to help address the fentanyl crisis.
Last year, Rep. Craig successfully urged the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to fully approve over-the-counter distribution of Narcan, a medicine used to reverse overdoses. Rep. Craig was trained to administer Narcan in August of last year.
Last February, Rep. Craig traveled with 17 Republicans to the southern border where she urged bipartisan action to prevent more overdose deaths and keep communities safe.
