Bipartisan Momentum Growing for Rep. Craig’s Bill to Support Apprenticeship Programs

July 26, 2023

Craig introduced the bipartisan legislation as part of her efforts to expand educational opportunities for all Minnesotans

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Representative Angie Craig (D-MN) and Pete Stauber’s (R-MN) bipartisan Supporting Apprenticeship Colleges Act of 2023 is building strong support from both Republicans and Democrats.

Since its introduction in May, the bill has gained the support of three Republicans and eight Democrats. The cosponsor list now includes Reps. Pete Stauber (R-MN), Brad Finstad (R-MN), Lori Chavez-DeRemer (R-OR), Betty McCollum (D-MN), Marilyn Strickland (D-WA), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Seth Moulton (D-MA), Greg Landsman (D-OH), Marc Veasey (D-TX), Nikki Budzinski (D-IL), Dean Phillips (D-MN), Thomas Kean (R-NJ) and Max Miller (R-OH).

The bipartisan legislation would provide grant funding to help apprenticeship colleges expand outreach to potential students and employers, improve academic advising programs and address common barriers to degree completion – like childcare access and support for first-generation students.

“Apprenticeship programs provide Minnesotans with the tools and skills needed to build a successful 21st-century career, without the burden of student loans. We’re building momentum from both Democrats and Republicans and I look forward to working with Rep. Stauber to get this one passed,” said Rep. Craig.

“I’m glad to see more of my colleagues are co-sponsoring the Supporting Apprenticeship Colleges Act to help combat the shortage of skilled trade workers. Apprenticeships are critical for hands-on learning opportunities and training our workforce. This bi-partisan bill will enhance our economy and help our middle class thrive,” said Rep. Stauber.
