Ahead of July 4th, Rep. Angie Craig Urges Speaker to Bring Her Lowering Costs Bill to a Vote

July 2, 2024

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, as Minnesotans prepare for their July 4th celebrations, U.S. Representative Angie Craig sent a letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson urging him to bring her bill, the Task Force to Stop Price Gouging Act, to a vote.

“We need to do more to lower inflation and help families who are struggling with higher costs. According to our farmers, a group of 10 people can expect to pay $71.22 for their celebration this year, up 5% from last year and up 30% from five years ago. Ground beef, pork chops and chicken breasts account for 50% of total cookout costs. One package of hamburger buns will cost you $2.41, 7% more than 2023. It is our duty as Members of Congress to respond to inflation that is causing record-high costs to ensure families can still put food on the table,” wrote Rep. Craig.

Rep. Craig’s Task Force to Stop Price Gouging Act would create a federal task force to investigate corporate and government behavior that results in increased prices for American families and release a quarterly report with its findings.

The task force would be comprised of teams from the Department of Agriculture, the Federal Trade Commission and the Justice Department.
