Rep. Angie Craig Secures More Than $80,000 to Expand Law Enforcement Mental Health Resources in Shakopee
SHAKOPEE, MN – U.S. Representative Angie Craig secured more than $80,000 to help expand mental health support for Shakopee law enforcement.
Rep. Craig began her push to secure the funding in April as part of her work to promote public safety in Shakopee.
The federal funding comes through the Department of Justice’s Law Enforcement Mental Health and Wellness Act (LEMHWA) Program, which recognizes the importance of officers’ mental health and well-being in addition to physical health.
“Expanding access to mental health resources has been a major focus of my work with the City of Shakopee and Chief Tate, and that’s why I pushed for this federal funding to promote law enforcement mental health and well-being,” said Rep. Craig. “These dollars will go directly towards providing support to Shakopee police officers and their families, and I’ll keep working to secure additional resources.”
“We are extremely happy to be receiving this grant. Officer wellness is a major priority and this grant will allow us to take our initiatives to the next level,” said Shakopee Police Chief Jeff Tate.
Last year, Rep. Craig helped pass the bipartisan Public Safety Officer Support Act to expand benefits for officers with work-related post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and for families of officers who die by trauma-linked suicide.
Rep. Craig also secured funding last year to help West St. Paul and South St. Paul hire additional police officers and promote community policing efforts.
