Congresswoman Angie Craig Submits Request for the City of Burnsville to Receive $3 Million for Highway 13 and Nicollet Avenue Mobility Improvement Project

June 3, 2022

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, U.S. Representative Angie Craig announced her submission for the City of Burnsville to receive $3,000,000 for the Highway 13 and Nicollet Avenue Mobility Improvement project in 2023. Craig submitted her request for Community Project Funding (CPF) for the Fiscal Year 2023 Appropriations process, through which Members of Congress are able to request funding for up to 15 specific projects in their districts which would serve the public good.

"I'm proud to announce my submission for the City of Burnsville to receive federal support for this important project," said Representative Craig. "These funds will help re-design the intersection of Highway 13 and Nicollet Avenue to increase its safety and efficiency – greatly improving one of the most important transit points in Dakota County."

"As Mayor of Burnsville, safety is always at the top of my mind. The $3 million dollars included in this community project funding will help redesign the ever-busy intersection of Highway 13 & Nicollet Avenue, making it safer for the many pedestrians, bicyclists and drivers who pass through it daily," saidBurnsville Mayor Elizabeth Kautz. "It was great working with Representative Angie Craig to secure these critical funds for our city."

The funding would be used for the environmental documentation and preliminary design of the Highway 13 & Nicollet Avenue Mobility Improvement Project, which, when completed, will separate the intersection of Minnesota Highway 13 and Nicollet Avenue. With two major transit stations directly adjacent and near Interstate 35W, this intersection is considered one of the most important for transit access in the southern metropolitan region. Today, this intersection is plagued with high-speed crashes, traffic congestion and stressful and dangerous crossings for pedestrians and bicyclists. Overall, this project will help reduce a major delay and improve safety.

The House Appropriations Committee intends to fund community projects on a limited basis in the FY23 Appropriations bills. Therefore, CPF requests that address the most significant needs of local communities or provide a significant public good are more likely to be included. The CPF program is being implemented with accountability measures to ensure a responsible and transparent process.
