Congresswoman Angie Craig Hosts 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment Celebration in South St. Paul

August 18, 2020

Today, U.S. Rep. Angie Craig was joined by Congresswoman Betty McCollum, South St. Paul Mayor Jimmy Francis and local elected officials to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment in South St. Paul.

South St. Paul is a historic place for today's celebration to take place. Shortly after its ratification on August 18, 1920, South St. Paul's Marguerite Newburgh became the first woman to vote in the United States after the passage of the 19th Amendment.

"As the first woman to represent Minnesota's Second Congressional District, I'm honored to host today's historic celebration in South St. Paul, where Marguerite Newburgh was the first woman to cast her vote 100 years ago," said Rep. Angie Craig. "On this historic day, we must also recognize that many Black women and women of color were unable to exercise their constitutional right for decades, and our minority communities continue to face voter suppression."
